Audition notice for No Drama Summer Production 2023! 🥳
‘The Real Inspector Hound’ by Tom Stoppard.
July 4th – July 8th, Smock Alley Boys School
The real inspector hound is a murder mystery farce parodying the likes of the Agatha Christie stories. It has an added layer of complexity in that its main protagonists are two theatre critics watching a production of the play in order to review it. All is revealed not to be as it seems and things become quite surreal, albeit still very funny.

ROLES
(Note applications are not restricted based on age, gender or ethnicity. Any indication in the descriptions below simply reflect the author’s intent for the character, not the actor.)
Birdboot – A theatre critic at the height of his powers, Birdboot is a womaniser who uses his stellar reputation and status to lure young starlets away to ‘discreet’ hotels in return for good reviews. He is well attired but with a casual arrogant stance. His only weakness is his desperate fear that his wife Myrtle will discover his infidelities.
Moon – Second string theatre critic, currently filling in for the main critic at their publication, Higgs, of whom they are jealous to the point of obsession. Moon is a nervous, self-conscious figure grappling with self-loathing and self-involved grandiosity. Moon dreams of one day being a top critic like Birdboot but we note their clothes aren’t as expensive or well-fitted as Birdboot’s. Indeed they are worn all buttoned up, a far cry from Birdboot’s casual swagger.
Play-within-the-play characters:
Mrs. Drudge – Housekeeper of Muldoon Manor, comically provides a great deal of the exposition of the play and sees all. Classic turbanned charlady in a house apron, probably younger than she looks.
Felicity Cunningham – Bright and bubbly and innocent, Felicity has fallen for that cad Simon Gascoyne and in ‘real life’ the actress is Birdboot’s latest conquest. When Simon drops her for Cynthia she becomes vengeful. Felicity wears a tennis outfit throughout.
Simon Gascoyne – The interloper with a loveable rogue quality, He sets his sights on Felicity but his head is quickly turned by Cynthia.
Cynthia Muldoon – The Lady of Muldoon, mourning her missing husband Albert, gone now 10 years. She proclaims herself upset about her missing husband and yet when Simon arrives it seems it’s all talk. Cynthia is sophisticated and beautiful, a contrast to Felicity’s girlishness, she is a femme fatale.
Major Magnus Muldoon – A retired Major, brother of the missing Albert, full of military bluster, wheelchair bound. He has his own designs on Cynthia and takes a dislike to Simon as a rival. He sports an excessively large moustache and is wrapped up well with his military insignia prominently displayed.
Inspector Hound – An eccentric character, Inspector Hound is on the trail of a madman capable of murder. More so than the others, Hound strikes a comical figure, wearing something like the classic Sherlock Holmes cape and hat.
