Four candidates arrive for a “group interview”. Eventually, what starts simply as an unorthodox exercise, turns out to be a series of games.

Characters go through challenges that are more personal than expected. It makes them confront their past, present and future. Healthy competition quickly turns into full-blown conflict. Human decency and limits are challenged.

The play explores the relationships among the four contenders. Common denominators throughout the play: Constant change of character motivation and characters clashing with each other.

Jordi Galcerán Ferrer accurately depicts a situation everyone has found themselves in: A job interview.

Galcerán got a few awards and became widely known with this play. Mostly due to the play’s simple language and character depth. What makes a person behave the way they do? One could describe this as a character drama or a dark comedy.

As a director, my objective is simple: I don’t want the audience to leave with an agreed perception of the play. I want people to disagree about what happened, who is who and who was right or wrong. Ideally, after the play ends the audience will feel compelled to go for a drink and have a heated discussion.

Important: Ages listed below are playing ages. If you can pass as an X year old male/female with the right make up, that’s fine.
What you will be asked for during the audition is: Can you portray the highs and lows of a character; can you follow guidance and change direction easily; what is your emotional range; can you extend your range with the right coaching; can you act consistent to your character’s motivation?

Characters:

– Frank, Male, 30s to 40s: Aggressive and rude. Wants the job no matter what. Abrasive, does not hold back even if that makes him an outcast in the group.

– Rick, Male, 30s to 50s: More of an introvert, looks for common ground. Has his own limits but will fight for what he wants.

– Melanie, Female, 20s to 40s: Independent, intelligent, also pushy; what you would call “leadership material”. She is not afraid to make serious sacrifices to succeed in a man’s world. Clashes with Frank.

– Carl, Male, late 20s to 40s: Smart, competent but also thoughtful. Crosses his limits during the interview but also goes back to what makes him human.

Please note there might be another audition in April for non-speaking roles. Keep an eye out on the socials.
